GENERAL MUSIC INFORMATION

Dear Parent or Guardian

Your child is taking part in a variety of activities in music class. These are designed to help your child develop musical skills and to know and appreciate many different styles of music.

The Music Program at McCord and Tobin Schools follows the Illinois State Music Curriculum and Guidelines. These guidelines emphasize the following concepts: rhythm, melody, harmony, style, form, tone color, dynamics, and texture, as well as a study of music history and composers. The interrelationship of all the music concepts is recognized and built upon throughout the school year.

The music program at McCord and Tobin Schools reinforces the teaching of basic skills such as math and reading through singing and rhythm activities; writing skills through written worksheets, notated lyrics and melodies; and history and geography through the singing of a variety of multi-cultural songs.

Singing activities include songs from our American folk tradition, songs from many different parts of the world, patriotic and holiday songs, and songs that are part of music dramas in which your child takes part. Your child will listen to music written in many styles and become familiar with many kinds of performing groups. In addition, time is spent playing simple instruments and discovering basic concepts about how music is put together.

You can reinforce what your child is learning in school in several ways. You can listen to music together, attend community concerts, and encourage your child to take part in school performing groups when they reach the appropriate grade levels to participate. You may also wish to take compact discs and tapes of different musical styles from the library.  Ask your child to tell you about some of the music class activities. In this way, music class can be extended into your home.

If you play an instrument you may wish to volunteer to give a mini concert/demonstration to your child's class. Remember that you don't have to be Mozart or play at the concert level. Even an adult at a beginning musical level would be very impressive to a primary class.

If you would like to schedule a mini concert or have any questions about the music program please contact me. I wish your child a successful year in school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Swanson
